GENEVA, N.Y. – Tufts earned a spot in the national championship match, topping DePauw 2-0 in an NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship semifinal match played Saturday on William Smith College’s McCooey Field.
The Jumbos are now 18-2 overall and will play the winner of between No. 3 Mary Washington and No. 2 Montclair State. The national championship match will be held on McCooey Field at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18.
First-year Dakota Sikes-Keilp broke though at 27:52 in the first period to put Tufts up 1-0. Senior Kelsey Perkins inserted the Jumbo corner right to Sikes-Keilp who drilled her shot into the back of the goal from the top of the circle. It was her second goal of the season.
The Tigers (21-2) had their best scoring chance with 2:36 left in the first. DePauw earned a corner. Senior Margaret Ellis lifted a shot that went by the Tufts goalie, but Jumbo defender senior Rachel Gerhardt was there to make the stellar defensive save.
Tufts added to their lead at 22:58 into the second half capitalizing on another corner. After some action in front of the goal, first-year Hannah Park pushed a pass across the circle to first-year Rachel Terveer, who sent her shot into the right side of the goal. It was her first tally this season.
Sophomore Brianne Keenan played all 70 minutes in goal for the Jumbos and stopped two shots. Sophomore Maggie Steele played the whole match for the Tigers and finished with five saves. Tufts enjoyed a 12-5 lead in shots and an 11-9 edge in corners.
