LeBron James is back on top of the most-popular jersey list, the NBA announced Wednesday. James, who had fallen from that perch last year, was obviously boosted by his trifecta of the NBA championship, MVP and Finals MVP, along with his gold medal in the Olympics.
It's maybe most interesting because it was assumed with the backlash following "The Decision" that the only reason he claimed the top spot in 2010 was because of the need for collectors to buy his new jersey with Miami. Instead, it would appear that the best player in the NBA is simply a popular shirt to wear. The rest of the list from the NBA:
1. LeBron James, Miami Heat
2. Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder
3. Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers
4. Carmelo Anthony, New York Knicks
5. Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls
6. Rajon Rondo, Boston Celtics
7. Dwyane Wade, Miami Heat
8. Blake Griffin, Los Angeles Clippers
9. Dwight Howard, Los Angeles Lakers
10. Chris Paul, Los Angeles Clippers
11. Deron Williams, Brooklyn Nets
12. Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder
13. Steve Nash, Los Angeles Lakers
14. Paul Pierce, Boston Celtics
15. Dirk Nowitzki, Dallas Mavericks
1. New York Knicks
2. Miami Heat
3. Los Angeles Lakers
4. Chicago Bulls
5. Boston Celtics
6. Oklahoma City Thunder
7. Brooklyn Nets
8. Los Angeles Clippers
9. San Antonio Spurs
10. Dallas Mavericks
Derrick Rose was tops in April, prior to his ACL injury. It'll be interesting to see how Rose fairs after he returns sometime after the beginning of the year. Meanwhile, Kevin Durant jumps from eighth to second on the strength of his Finals run last year, while Rajon Rondo seems to be gaining traction. Meanwhile, Jeremy Lin's switch to Houston took all the air out of his sales, it would seem.
Can we take this as a sign that people have gotten over "The Decision," finally? Or just that the alternate black jersey is incredibly popular? April's figures will be intensely interesting this season.
