Tulane Accepts Invitation To Join BIG EAST Conference

    Nov. 27, 2012 12:00 AM ET

    Tulane -- Nov. 27, 2012

    NEW ORLEANS -
Tulane University has accepted an invitation to join the BIG EAST Conference in all sports, beginning in the 2014-15 season, President Scott Cowen and Big East Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco announced today.
"Tulane University is an outstanding addition to the BIG EAST Conference and we are very excited to have them as a full member," Aresco said. "They will make great contributions. Tulane has a superior academic reputation and they are committed to excellence in athletics. They are a great fit for the BIG EAST."
"Tulane University is pleased to accept membership in the BIG EAST Conference," Cowen said. "The BIG EAST is a distinguished collection of institutions that will be a wonderful home for Tulane. We look forward to our mutual association and we are delighted to welcome the BIG EAST to the Big Easy!"
Tulane's appeal to the BIG EAST centered around its academic profile as a major research and highly selective university with membership in the Association of American Universities (AAU); its location in New Orleans, which provides a new market for the BIG EAST, and its track record as holder of more C-USA championships than any other school from 1997 to 2005, said Cowen.
The BIG EAST presidents were also impressed by Tulane's recovery after Hurricane Katrina and its renewed commitment to athletics that included the reinstatement of a full complement of Division I athletics programs.
The move to the BIG EAST comes at a time of unprecedented growth in Tulane's athletics program. In the last four years, Tulane has either completed or announced plans to upgrade facilities for nearly every athletics program. This includes the recently announced Yulman Stadium, Tulane's first on-campus stadium in 40 years.
"This is yet another step forward for our athletics program and Tulane University," Tulane Director of Athletics Rick Dickson said. "Tulane is joining a conference that has the largest footprint in college sports and one that has a storied history. Our coaches and student-athletes are thrilled with the opportunity to compete at the BIG EAST level. In addition, many of our alumni are located in the Northeast and we attract many students from that area. Tulanians will come out in force to support the Green Wave in the BIG EAST."
Tulane's other major athletics facility improvements include a major renovation of the Devlin Fieldhouse, home of the Green Wave men's and women's basketball and volleyball programs as well as construction of the Hertz Center, a basketball and volleyball practice facility. Tulane also completed Greer Field at Turchin Stadium, home of the Green Wave baseball team in 2008.
On the horizon is an Olympic-style village that will serve as the home for the Green Wave's track & field/cross country programs, the men's and women's tennis programs, women's sand volleyball and football practice fields.
Until the move to the BIG EAST in July 2014, Tulane will continue to compete in Conference USA (C-USA).
"As we prepare to for the transition of our programs, I would like to acknowledge C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky and his tireless efforts on behalf of the members of the conference. He is a great ambassador for college athletics," Dickson said.
Founded in 1834, Tulane is one of the most highly regarded and selective independent research universities in the United States and a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, an association of 62 leading research universities in the United States and Canada.
Tulane will join a conference that features many of the top universities in the nation, including six schools that rank among the top 100 universities in the U.S. News & World Report's 2013 Best Colleges.
Over the last eight years, Green Wave student-athletes have been among the highest achievers in the nation in the classroom, according to the most recent multi-year Academic Performance Rates (APR).
One of the top destination cities in the United States, New Orleans was listed as the top selection for "America's Favorite City" by Travel & Leisure in 2012. New Orleans' population of 1,337,726 ranks 35th nationally, while its local television market ranks 52nd with 643,660 television homes in 2012.
With the addition of Tulane, the BIG EAST football membership will now be in 12 states, 12 of the top 50 Nielsen media markets and six of the top 25 media markets. The conference will have a television households reach of 24.3 million - by far the largest number in college football.

Men's Tennis Adds Kuwert for Spring Semester

    Nov. 29, 2012 12:00 AM ET

    Old Dominion -- Nov. 29, 2012
NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University men's tennis will add Jonas Kuwert in the 2013 spring semester, head coach Aljosa Piric announced Thursday.
"We are excited to have Jonas join the Monarch family. He is a high level student-athlete, with passion to excel in both the classroom and on a tennis court. The combination of these two components make him an ideal recruit for the ODU tennis program. We look for him to be an immediate contributor in both singles and doubles," Piric said.
Kuwert, a native of Jesteburg, Germany, was ranked as high as No. 10 in Germany in the under 18 range and reached No. 132 in the men's open division.
"I decided to come to ODU because of all the great things coach Piric and Koning said over the last six months. They really gave me the feeling that they are motivated to help me with my game and bring it to a higher level," Kuwert said. "Their goals to reach the top of college tennis are in line with my goals and I look forward to being an ODU Monarch. Furthermore, I am looking forward to a new adventure, meeting new people and getting my degree."

Tennis referee murder case dismissed in California

    CBSSports.com wire reports
    Nov. 30, 2012 4:08 PM ET

LOS ANGELES -- The arrest of an aging tennis referee in her husband's death was a shocker last summer. On Friday, the case took another surprise twist when prosecutors dropped the murder case against Lois Goodman.
The case was dismissed by Superior Court Judge Jessica Silvers after prosecutors said they received additional information and were unable to proceed.
"I feel I'm being treated fairly now. It was just a terrible accident," Goodman, 70, said outside court.
District attorney's spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons declined to elaborate on the new information that led to the dismissal.
However, defense attorney Alison Triessl said she believed private polygraph tests conducted by a former FBI polygraph examiner were pivotal in proving that Goodman did not kill her husband
The case was dismissed without prejudice, meaning it could be refiled. But Triessl believes it's over.
"We're elated," Triessl said. "This has been a living hell for her. Justice has been served. She did not do this."
Goodman has refereed matches between some of the greatest tennis players in the world.
She had been accused of bludgeoning her 80-year-old husband to death with a coffee cup. She said she was innocent, and her lawyers suggested Alan Goodman died in an accidental fall.
They said he fell down stairs then managed to get himself upstairs to the bedroom and was found dead in bed. Blood was spattered throughout the house, police said.
Defense private investigator Scott Ross told The Associated Press that famed pathologist Dr. Michael Baden examined the coroner's evidence in the case and found that Alan Goodman died of a heart attack, not from any injuries.
"His heart was four times the normal size," Ross said.
The couple had been married 50 years and had three grown daughters. They lived in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles their entire lives.
Alan Goodman died in April. Authorities initially believed he fell down the stairs while his wife was away, but they later said it was a homicide after a mortuary reported suspicious injuries on his head.
Authorities then alleged he had been clobbered on the head with a mug, and they began to treat Lois Goodman as a suspect.
Defense lawyers said there was little forensic evidence in the case because of the delay in the investigation. They recently disclosed Lois Goodman had passed polygraph tests supporting her claim of innocence.
Goodman was arrested by Los Angeles police in New York in August as she arrived to be a line judge at the U.S. Open. She made her first court appearance wearing her uniform.
    Goodman pleaded not guilty.
After a brief stay in jail, she was released on electronic monitoring and subsequently came to court for pretrial hearings with friends and family present to support her.
"I definitely want to get back to refereeing," Goodman said after the dismissal. "But first I want to call my close friends that supported me and thank them again and again."

MILAN (AP) - Maria Sharapova aims to return to the No. 1 spot in the rankings after a solid season in 2012.

Sharapova, who had shoulder surgery in 2008, briefly reach No. 1 last spring after winning the French Open to complete a Career Grand Slam.

Sharapova arrived in Milan to play an exhibition tournament on Saturday with another former No. 1, Ana Ivanovic. They will face Italians Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci in singles and doubles.

"Obviously, the goal is always to shoot for top spot and that's always where you want to be and stay," Sharapova said. "It's one thing to reach the No. 1 ranking, another to keep it."

Errani also had a successful year, improving to No. 6 in the world from No. 45. She reached the final at Ronaldo Garros, where she lost to Sharapova, and the semifinals of the US Open.

Errani won the doubles title at both events with Vinci, and they finished as the top-ranked doubles team.

"It's been an incredible year," Errani said. "Starting from the Australian Open, I had very great results and was consistent, in the singles as well as the doubles. It will be hard to repeat that next year, but I will always try to give my maximum."

Men's Tennis Welcomes Three New Aggies

    Nov. 30, 2012 12:00 AM ET
    UC Davis -- Nov. 30, 2012

DAVIS, Calif. - Parker Kelley has signed a grant-in-aid form to join the UC Davis men's tennis team while Alec Adamson and James Wade have each signed National Letters of Intent, it was announced by head coach Eric Steidlmayer.

Kelley, a transfer from College of the Desert, will compete for the Aggies beginning in December. A four-time All-Bay League first team selection at Mira Costa HS in Manhattan Beach, Kelley was the 2010 Bay League doubles champion and was runner-up in doubles at the CIF-Southern Section finals. Ranked the 29th-best prospect in California by USTA, he was part of a USTA National Championship doubles pairing in 2010.

At College of the Desert, Parker was part of a Roadrunner team that won an unprecedented 14th state championship title in 2011. He played at No. 1 singles for the 2011-12 season as College of the Desert was the top-ranked junior college in the nation for most of the year and also excelled at doubles, winning the Men's Community College Doubles title at the 112th Annual Ojai Valley Tournament in April 2012.

"Parker is a great competitor who is going to help us right away in both singles and doubles," said Steidlmayer. "His extensive experience in juniors and collegiate tennis have given him a high level of confidence, and (assistant coach) Michael (Meyer) and I both believe he can play at a very high level."

Adamson and Wade will join the UC Davis men's team in the fall of 2013.

"We are excited to have both James and Alec join us," continued Steidlmayer. "Both are quality players who have had very good junior careers in one of the toughest tennis sections in America. They are both eager, confident and competitive individuals who want to see UC Davis tennis excel in the next few years."

Adamson arrives at UC Davis from Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, Calif. He played at No. 1 singles during his junior season, helping the Sea Kings advance to their first CIF-Southern Section championship since 2003. For his efforts, Adamson earned his first-ever spot on the All-Pacific League singles first team as well as the All-Orange County second team.

As a sophomore in 2011, Adamson and Corona del Mar HS reached the CIF-SS quarterfinals. He was selected to the Pacific Coast League doubles first team and the Orange County doubles first team.

Wade closed out his junior season at San Marino High School as the Pasadena Star News Player of the Year after a 42-5 record at the No. 1 singles position. He won the Rio Honda League singles title, advancing to the CIF-Southern Section championship where he reached the round of 16. His team voted him Most Valuable Player as well as team captain.

He was an All-Rio Honda League first team selection in singles as a sophomore after picking up a second-team nod in his debut season with San Marino HS. Wade has competed at the CIF-Southern Section championships in all three years of his prep career.

"Alec is an all-court player who has relied on his backhand and court knowledge to win matches in the past, but his forehand, fitness and all-around game is improving," said Steidlmayer. "James is an athletic competitor who attacks at every opportunity, especially with his forehand. We love his ability to move as well as the leadership he exhibits on and off the court. We expect both to improve a great deal over the next year and be ready to immediately establish themselves as collegiate players once they arrive at UC Davis."

The Aggies resume action on Jan. 19 at Santa Clara before hosting Sonoma State (Jan. 25) and Pacific (Jan. 26) in back-to-back contest at the Marya Welch Tennis Center in Davis.
