Seven players already skating in Germany's top professional league, the DEL, were among the 28 players invited to take part in Germany's selection camp for the 2013 World Junior Championship.
Germany is back in the top division of the WJC this year after winning the gold medal in the Division I Group A tournament last year. It will play in Pool B this year, along with Russia, Canada, Slovakia and the United States.
The 2013 WJC runs Dec. 26 to Jan. 5, 2013, in Ufa, Russia. Germany opens the tournament Dec. 26 against Canada.
Among those taking part in the German camp are Leo Pfoderl, a right wing with Nurnberg. He leads all under-20 players in the DEL with three goals. Also coming from their German teams are goalie Philip Lehr, defenseman Henry Haase and Manuel Kindl, and forwards Daniel Fischbuch, Christian Kretschmann and Andreas Pauli.
Also taking part are a few players familiar to North American hockey fans. Goalie Marvin Cupper plays in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Shawinigan Cataractes; forward Nikolas Latta plays for the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League; and forward Sebastian Uvira plays for the Oshawa Generals of the OHL.
Of the players attending camp, 27 are eligible for the 2013 NHL Draft. The only player with an NHL affiliation is forward Tobias Rieder, a 2012 fourth-round pick of the Edmonton Oilers. He plays for the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL.
