Veteran first baseman Carlos Pena has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Astros for $2.9 million. He can earn an additional $1.4 million in performance bonuses.
Pena, 34, hit .197 with 19 home runs and 61 RBIs in 160 games for the Rays this past season. The left-handed hitter has hit 277 home runs and driven in 791 runs in parts of 12 seasons with the Rangers, A's, Tigers, Red Sox, Cubs and Rays.
Drafted by the Rangers in the first round of the 1998 First-Year Player Draft, Pena is expected to play first base and see action as the team's designated hitter. The deal likely ends Houston's pursuit of longtime Astros star Lance Berkman.
