Indie film producer SnagFilms has launched a free on-demand film viewing app in the Xbox LIVE marketplace.
The initial film library includes a curated selection of documentaries and fictional films. The SnagFilms app will add a fresh selection of indie film titles every two weeks.
The company now offers more than 500 films available across iPad, iPhone, Android, Sony and Roku ecosystems.
"We were honoured to be asked by Xbox to bring our library to their platform," says Rick Allen, CEO of SnagFilms. "Xbox continues to expand their users' entertainment choices, and we continue to bring great films to broader audiences - where, how and when they want to watch."
The SnagFilms app offers recommendations to Xbox LIVE users from the company's editors while also providing the ability to browse by topics and create personalized queues. The app's user-interface functions are anchored by its leverage of Kinect for Xbox 360, enabling navigation with hand motions or voice commands in addition to the Xbox controller.
Guided by a tech- and content-savvy board, SnagFilms has focused on the indie movie niche in part because of tech's unique role for independent filmmakers: while mass media content could easily be available on all platforms, smaller creators need technology to circumvent the bottleneck presented by traditional distribution.
