Proving you can't keep a good man down, former ITV director of television Simon Shaps is to join forces with the Core Media Group to build the latter's international base.
Core Media owns what it calls "the gold standard of music competition programme" in the form of American Idol, and owns the enduring broadcast franchise So You Think You Can Dance.
Under the terms of the deal with the entertainment company, the renowned TV figure — who ran Granada's and then ITV's global production business, before taking over as director of television — will form his own in-house team in London to create formats for the global marketplace, including the UK and US, and identify international investment opportunities.
As MD, international content and production, Shaps will report to Marc Graboff, president of Core Media Group, and will also be tasked with identifying investment opportunities for Core, including production companies and international formats. Formats will be sold across the global marketplace such as the UK and then brought back to the US.
Commenting on the new set-up, Graboff said: "Core is committed to bringing its unique approach for creating and developing our own shows to the international market and we could not ask for a better partner than Simon Shaps, a true visionary who has one of the best track records in the industry. We look forward to working with him on building Core's international presence."
For his part, Shaps added: "I was hugely impressed by the calibre of the team at Core Media Group, under Marc's leadership. They have already expanded the business in the US, and I am delighted to work with them to grow Core's assets internationally."
