Spain's main telecoms operator Abertis Telecom is to carry out the first Ultra HDTV over DTT transmissions in the world at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) taking place in Barcelona from 25-28 February.
The transmissions will be viewed on an 84" TV screen which will allow viewers to see the quality of the image the system offers, four times higher than that of HDTV.
Abertis Telecom will carry out the tests in collaboration with Televisión Española (TVE), the European Broadcasting Union (UER), SAPEC, the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, La Salle, Sony and production company Lapospo. The tests will use technology developed by the second generation DTT under the DVB-T2 standard on the same frequency band used for TV broadcasting at present.
Abertis Telecom will also test the second generation DTT standard within the so-called CATT2 project for the development of the DVB-T2 technology in mobiles. The objective of this project is to study and implement the possibilities of this new standard in its improved version for mobile terminals (T2-Lite).
