Matt Birk expected to retire from Baltimore Ravens, NFL

Baltimore Ravens center Matt Birk will announce his retirement on Friday after 15 seasons in the NFL, the Baltimore Sun reported Thursday night.

Birk had said after Super Bowl XLVII that he was unlikely to retire.

Birk was drafted in the sixth round by the Minnesota Vikings out of Harvard in 1998. He played in Minnesota for his first 11 seasons in the league.

Birk won the NFL's Walter Payton Man of the Year Award for 2011. The 36-year-old has been voted to the Pro Bowl team six times.
