Sky Deutschland subscriber growth slows

The subscriber growth of Sky Deutschland has lost pace during Q1 2013 with the number of new customers rising by 42,100 compared to 72,700 in Q1 2012.

In total, the German pay-TV broadcaster now has 3.4 million customers. The financial development was positive, however, with the net loss decreasing from €73 million in Q1 2012 to €37.6 million in Q1 2013.

Turnover rose by 14.3% to €364 million. With €5.8 million, the EBITDA was in the black following a negative EBITDA of €40.6 million in Q1 2012.

Sky expects the EBITDA to remain positive during the whole of 2013 and continue to grow thereafter. However, the subscription broadcaster still doesn't say when it expects to reach black figures below the line – the crucial point.

There will also be a new service as Sky wants to launch a Sky Sport News HD app this summer. The application will enable sports fans to watch the 24-hour sports news channel in Germany and Austria while on-the-go. The offering will contain free and premium content such as audio and video live streams of Sky Sport News HD, highlight clips, short reports, alert services, background information and statistics.
