Some may say there is a battle line drawn between home gateway and over-the-top services, but anticipating the bigger picture of hybrid solutions, Conax has launched a software development kit (SDK) containing Microsoft PlayReady DRM solution for OTT clients.

The multi-device and digital video content protection specialist says that the SDK will be able to manage all communication between the streaming server and the native player with additional layers of security.
It adds that its implementation for MS PlayReady conforms to Microsoft's rules for compliance and robustness as well as the security requirements from Hollywood studios and content providers.
Conax recognises that the PlayReady protocol is a standard compatible with most consumer devices and systems on the market today. To that end its security-hardened implementation is said to embrace advanced security technologies such as obfuscation, trip wires, variability, renewability, secure storage, secure time and optimised cryptography among other features.
"While OTT services have the potential to enable content aggregators to capitalise on new revenue streams, anytime/anywhere consumer services must be transported securely to OTT devices such as tablets or smartphones or traditional STBs to ensure protection of content and revenues," explained Tom Jahr, Conax's EVP products & partners. "[The] Conax Secure Client provides the framework for content distributors to seamlessly integrate Conax world class content protection technology into their OTT operation with best-of-breed security for their premium content," he added.
