South African TV licence fee hike

Television licence fees in South Africa are to rise in September the first such increase for viewers since 2009.

"The annual fee for a domestic, business, dealer and lessor licence will increase by R15 from R250 to R265," said Kaizer Kganyago, spokesman for the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). "This equals an increase of only R1.25 per month."
The decision follows the approval of a 6% increase in TV licences by the Communications Minister.
People over 70 and those in receipt of social grants from the state will see their concessionary TV licences rise by R4 to R74 as of 1 September 2013.
It is the fourth tariff increase the Government has granted the free-to-air state broadcaster in the past 14 years.
