    July 16, 2013

Al Jazeera Sport has secured rights to English Premier League football in the Middle East and North Africa for the next three years, starting from next month.

Al Jazeera has struck a deal with sports rights outfit MP & Silva, which secured the rights to distribute Premier League games in the region in January, for access to all 380 matches across the Arab-speaking world.

MP & Silva are understood to have paid about US$300 million (€230 million) for the League at the time, beating previous rights holders Abu Dhabi Media as well as Al Jazeera. The value of the deal with Al Jazeera, which has not been disclosed, comes after a period when it was not clear who would broadcast EPL matches in the region.

“We are extremely excited by the addition of the Barclays Premier League for the next three year cycle, the value that this can add to our customer proposition and extending further our portfolio of top European football,” said Al Jazeera Sport chairman Nasser Al Khelaifi.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome Al Jazeera Sport as a new partner in Middle East North Africa. We look forward to working with them and are confident they will broadcast the Barclays Premier League in a comprehensive and innovative manner to our fans in the region,” said Premier League CEO Richard Scudamore.

Qatar's Al Jazeera Sport has won the rights to broadcast English Premier League football across 23 countries in the Middle East and North Africa until summer 2016, in a move which is likely to bolster its position as the most watched regional pay-TV network.

The satellite broadcaster acquired the rights from distributor MP & Silva, who reportedly paid close to US$300 million for the three year deal with the Premier League in January – a similar price to that paid by the previous regional rights holder Abu Dhabi Media (ADM).
"We are extremely excited by the addition of the Barclays Premier League for the next three-year cycle, the value that this can add to our customer proposition and extending further our portfolio of top European football," Nasser Al Khelaifi, chairman, Al Jazeera Sport, said in a statement.
Richard Scudamore, chief executive, Premier League, added: "We are extremely pleased to welcome Al Jazeera Sport as a new partner in Middle East North Africa.
"We look forward to working with them and are confident they will broadcast the Barclays Premier League in a comprehensive and innovative manner to our fans in the region."
Former Sky Sports front men Richard Keys and Andy Gray will present the English language programmes, while Ayman Jada and Mohammed Saadon Al Kuwari will present the Arabic coverage beginning on 17 August.
Three new high definition (HD) channels will reportedly be launched to accommodate the Premier League matches, adding to Al Jazeera Sport's existing 19 channels which broadcast live coverage of top flight Spanish and Italian league football, among other varied content.
In addition to the Premier League, Al Jazeera Sport has reportedly secured rights going forward from MP & Silva and Pitch International for Italian Serie A football and Major League Soccer (MLS) from the US, along with the FA Cup and Brazil and England international matches.
Club content for English teams Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, and Italian teams AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus are also reported to be among its acquisitions.
