Tigo to launch sports channel in Paraguay

Tigo is planning its own sports channel for Paraguay, according to the newspaper Última Hora, quoting members of the Chamber of Cable Operators.

Tigo would keep Unicanal as a general information channel and both channels would be still broadcast through Tigo TV and the various cable operators in the country.
The project is connected to the recent purchase of Teledeporte by Tigo. The sports channel owns the rights of local competitions and this is why Tigo is considering launching its own product.
Tigo currently offers Unicable for $6 per subscriber, but an increase in price will be made if the sports channel is added to the offer. Competitors, such as Fox Sports, are available for a much lower price, which has generated some complaints from viewers.
Nearly 80 pay-TV operators offer Unicable in Paraguay, but Tigo TV is only available in the capital district. Tigo is also considering offering football programming through a DTH service, in which Telefonica Media Networks is also interested.
