German commercial broadcast group Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland has launched an over-the-top (OTT) comedy channel for viewers with a TV or set-top box compliant with interactive multimedia standard HbbTV and connected to the Internet.
Clipfish Comedy offers around 30 formats ranging from Web-only shows like Y-Titty and Freshaltefolie and RTL series such as Böse Mädchen and Stars bei der Arbeit to classics like Mr Bean and Little Britain.
The free-of-charge OTT service, which will gradually be stocked up with further formats, is financed by advertisements and distribution is via cable and satellite.
Access is through the red button on the remote control when watching RTL. The current most popular comedy clips are shown automatically at the start. In the menu, the preceding and following video is shown in a small window so viewers can select and watch them instantly.
Through the pause function, the videos can be stopped and continued. The menu also offers the possibility to move directly to individual genres, for example stand-up comedy, and watch the videos on-demand.
After RTL digitaltext, VOX digitaltext, n-tv digitaltext, kochbar and Clipfish Music, Clipfish Comedy is RTL's sixth free-of-charge HbbTV service. The HbbTV-based video-on-demand (VOD) services RTL Now, VOX Now, n-tv Now and Super RTL Now are available for a fee through HD+ Replay via satellite.
