German transmitter network operator Media Broadcast has taken its TV companion service multithek to mobile devices. With the free-of-charge app available for operating systems iOS and Android, TV viewers can use their smartphone or tablet, for example the iPad or iPhone, as a remote control for multithek.
The app also provides design, rating and personalisation features, for example management of favourite programmes and sorting and filtering the offerings of content and service providers.
Through a recommendation and rating system, users can place their own ratings and look up content based on the ratings of other users.
The multithek, which is currently available in 12 DTT coverage areas, supplements digital terrestrial television with Internet offerings such as catch-up TV services provided by public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, Web TV and regular TV channels as OTT live streams which viewers can watch on their conventional TV screens. For usage of the free-of-charge service, DTT households need a TV set or set-top box compliant with interactive multimedia standard HbbTV and connected to the Internet.
