Now well-established as a fixture of the season, the final day of the English Premier League football transfer window has become big box office on the small screen.
Exemplified by the almost hysterical enthusiasm of Sky Sports anchor Jim White in his channel's 12-hour special coverage that sees reporters stationed outside club car parks up and down England, the last day of the window now attracts mass coverage from the likes of the BBC and Eurosport.
Indeed the latter claims to have kicked off the football season in winning form after being used by a record number of fans to follow breaking news from the football transfer window and live match commentaries from across the European leagues. The pan-European sports channel claims that over 2.3 million fans followed the action on mobile with Eurosport.com — which comprises 15 websites worldwide in 11 languages, including Yahoo! Eurosport co-branded sites in Germany, Spain, Italy and the UK and Onet co-branded site in Poland —beating the previous daily record by over 113,000. The station added that the figures for 1 September completed a record-breaking week on mobile as it passed the two million average daily visitor mark for the first time, welcoming nearly 200,000 additional fans each day on the previous record week.
The BBC also claimed record coverage claiming a peak audience of 1.8 million for its deadline day show on 2 September. It added that audiences followed the latest rumours and signings throughout the day across four screens – PCs, tablets, mobiles and connected TVs – leading to BBC Sport online reporting its highest number of global daily unique browsers ever, outside of the London 2012 Olympic Games, setting a record for 2013. The majority of users accessed the BBC Sport site via PCs (47% of total daily UK requests) closely followed by mobiles (38.5%). Overall traffic peaked between 10pm and 11pm as the window closed, which was also the peak time for mobile, tablet and connected TV access.
"Transfer deadline day is always a massive day for BBC Sport and it really demonstrates the unique multiplatform broadcast offering which audiences get from us," commented Richard Burgess, head of sports news and radio sport. "From the record usage of the BBC Sport website and mobile, simulcast red button and online programming throughout the day, BBC Radio 5 live's top pundit line-up being there every step of the way and a Deadline Day Special on BBC One which drew a peak audience of 1.8 million, it's a real team effort that pays dividend in delivering the very best in football journalism to our audiences, wherever they are, both domestically and globally."
