Kabel Deutschland wants to roll out its video-on-demand service (VOD) Select Video to another million households by summer 2014. The towns in which cable customers will be able to watch movies by pressing a button on the remote control of their set-top box will include Leipzig and Mainz.
The full list of the towns to be served will be announced later this year. Select Video, which comprises both fee-based and free-of-charge content, is currently available in ten cities including Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg and Munich.
Select Video contains around 2,700 movies, some of which are available at the same time as their DVD release. Also on board are around 4,000 pieces of content from free-to-air and pay-TV channels such as Sat.1, ProSieben, History and Syfy.
More than 60% of the content is available in HD quality, some in 3D. To access Select Video, cable households need one of the current models of the HD receivers or HD PVRs provided by Kabel Deutschland.
