At IBC, France Télévisions is to introduce the binaural listening project BiLi, a collaboration involving ten French partners from 2013 to 2016.
Binaural listening is reported to have great potential in the consumer domain for an immersive experience such as 3D audio over headphones.
The BiLi partners will demonstrate binaural individualised solutions to target a high level of sound fidelity and spatial immersion
BiLi aims to bring professional and consumer tools for the individualisation of binaural listening. The project also works on new reference content such as multichannel, 3D audio and object-orientated content.
BiLi aims to standardise the sector with plans for a methodology for spatial audio subjective testing and, together with the SOFA project, the standardisation of a HRTF file format.
It also collaborates with the video project 4EVER HEVC to draw together the future of TV, associating 3D audio with UltraHD video.
BiLi gathers research teams from IRCAM, Orange Labs and LIMSI-CNRS, along with the companies A-Volute, Trinnov Audio, Digital Media Solutions and Arkamys.
France Télévisions leads the BiLi project, with Radio France and the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris, feeding the partners with reference multichannel, 3D audio and object-orientated content to drive development.
