Vodafone is optimistic that its planned acquisition of Kabel Deutschland for €11 billion will soon be approved.

According to German news magazine Focus, the mobile network operator internally hopes to receive the green light from the EU authorities in September 2013.

Vodafone could then also quickly grant its 32 million mobile network customers improved access to Wi-Fi hotspots.

"Never before have so many pictures and videos been sent through the net as today," Jens Schulte-Bockum, CEO of Vodafone Deutschland, told the magazine. This would only function in faster networks, he added.

Vodafone's customers could initially use hotspots without additional charge in Berlin and Potsdam, with several cities in Bavaria to follow. At Deutsche Telekom the customers surfed the net through hotspots for a total of 2.1 billion minutes last year.
