Technicolor, ABC Television Australia and Australian producer Avrill Stark’s A Stark Production have finalised a partnership for the development of the graphic novel series The Deep as a CGI animated children’s series.
Steven Wendland, Vice President of Animation, Technicolor’s Digital Productions Division, said: “Inspired by the imaginative stories of Tom Taylor and the magnificent illustrations of James Brouwer, the ABC Television/Stark/Technicolor partnership shares a vision for this series as an inventive and visually stunning entertainment experience for the entire family."
Avrill Stark, CEO & executive producer, A Stark Production, added: “I’m elated to be working with Technicolor and ABC Television on the development of The Deep. With storylines blending science fiction / fantasy and underwater adventures with family relationships, together with spectacular visuals, this series is sure to be off the charts when it comes to innovation and pushing creative boundaries.”
Chris Rose, Commissioning Editor Animation, ABC Television, said: “The combined creative expertise of Technicolor and Avrill Stark and the response by children to The Deep graphic novels immediately piqued our interest. We’re excited to be involved in the development of this new series.”
Created by Tom Taylor, The Deep follows the adventures of a family of underwater explorers who seek to unravel the mysteries of the deep sea. Technicolor, ABC Television and A Stark Production will develop stories for CGI animated episodes of The Deep, targeting children aged 8 to 12 and their families, with a view to securing finance to produce 26 half-hour episodes. Technicolor will present The Deep to other potential partners in the Buyers’ Club at this year’s MIPJunior/MIPCOM (5-10 October).
