A new report from Digital TV Research into European TV channel distribution has found the Discovery Channel to be the widest distributed network in Europe.
The report, covering nearly 300 channels and networks from over 200 operators in 43 EMEA countries discovered Discovery on 171 platforms, edging out Fox's National Geographic which was found on 169, Eurosport (164), Viacom's MTV (160) and CNN (157).
The survey also showed the growing take up of HD across the continent, and the analyst found that of the 270 total tracked, almost a third (86 channels) are transmitted in high definition (HD). National Geographic was the most distributed HD channel, carried by 126 operators followed by Eurosport on 122 platforms, followed by Fox's Nat Geo Wild (85) and Discovery HD showcase (74). The UK's BSkyB leads in HDTV provision, by offering more than 67 HD channels.
The TV Channel Distribution in Europe report also showed that 14 groups contributed 257 channels, 95% of the total, with these groups providing 83 of the 86 HD channels covered.
