Endemol Studios has closed a deal to develop and produce an English-language series adaptation of the hit French crime thriller Engrenages for US television, produced by Son et Lumière in association with Canal+.
Endemol North America's scripted studio operation, based in Los Angeles and run by CEO Philippe Maigret, aims to "develop a distinctive, unapologetic, gripping drama set against the backdrop of today's US legal system," it announced in a press release.
Engrenages premiered on French pay-TV network Canal+ in December 2005, with the fifth season expected to air in 2014 and a sixth season already in development.
The show has also become an export success, with sales to over 60 territories including the UK – where the series, subtitled Spiral, has gained a devout following on BBC4 – and in North America, where the first three seasons are available on Netflix.
Engrenages is the second French series tapped by Endemol Studios for US adaptation, after the political series Les Hommes de l'Ombre (Tetra Media, France 2), which is due to air on AMC.
In the US, Endemol Studios already has Hell on Wheels, now in its third season, on AMC, as well as Red Widow, produced for ABC, and Low Winter Sun, currently in its first season on the channel. The studio's scripted development slate also includes six projects set up with various networks.
