Telefónica to leave German IPTV market

Telefónica Germany will close down its IPTV platform Alice TV on 31 December 2013. The reason for this is the changed habits of viewers who increasingly want to consume TV and video content on-demand, a Telefónica spokeswoman told Rapid TV News.

"Offerings which can't be accessed at the individual time of choice are not much in demand," the spokeswoman explained. "Because of this development, we have decided to close down Alice TV." The company doesn’t currently have further plans in the IPTV arena. "But we continue to look at possibilities in the digital entertainment area, of course," she added.

Telefónica Germany ceased marketing its TV service to new customers in March 2012, only offering it to existing customers. Alice TV launched in 2006 as Germany's first IPTV platform, but didn't manage to prevail against its strong competitors Entertain from Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone TV.
