French and German channels drive European YouTube audiences

Original French and German YouTube channels, especially comedy and dedicated motor formats, have attracted bigger European ratings than UK sites, according to a study by IHS.
French and German non-English-speaking channels reach an average of 14 million views per channel, while UK channels register 11 million.
The first two most successful channels are Motorvision – a German car channel run by MV Media, reaching 69 million views and 12% of all channels views – and French production company Black Dynamite's comedy channel Studio Bagel, which attracts 63 million views and 11% of the total.
Third is Mediakraft's German comedy channel Ponk with 53 million views and 10% of the total.
BBC Earth follows with 40 million hits ahead of football service Copa90 with 30 million.
Comedy channels Ponk and Studio Bagel have 23% of the total original channel subscriptions.
According to IHS, the fact that UK users move between domestic and US content, could explain why non-English-speaking original channels are more successful, along with the fact that the number of French and German content is smaller, "and therefore the original channels in those languages find it easier to stand out," says IHS.
Globally, the 16 entertainment channels launched are performing well, attracting 11.6 million views per channel on average.
