Kenya's Wananchi Group has a new chief commercial officer in the shape of Charles Murito, former director of business development for Africa and the Middle East at Turner Broadcasting Europe.
The operator of East African pay-TV platform Zuku says Murito will oversee all revenue generation through channel distribution, content sales, sponsorship and promotion, in addition to licensing and merchandising.
"Zuku is at a very exciting time in its commercial development and Charles's wealth of industry knowledge and track record of commercial success will help take our growth to the next level. It is his international experience combined with local sensibilities that allows Charles to really understand Zuku's goals and future ambitions," said Hannelie Bekker, managing director, Wananchi Programming.
Murito added: "Zuku's platform and programming promise not only a depth of opportunity unrivalled in the industry but they are having a significant socio-cultural impact on local communities in Africa and this is something I definitely want to be part of."
The news follows a recent licensing deal struck between Wananchi and Seychelles cable platform Intelvision to carry Zuku television channels.
The three-year deal will bring Zuku Life, four Zuku Movies channels and Zuku Swahili Movies to Intelvision subscribers with immediate effect – and marks the first time Zuku has travelled outside East Africa.
