Switzerland's largest cable operator UPC Cablecom will offer its customers the ability to watch TV programmes after they have been broadcast through a replay function to be launched on the multimedia set-top box Horizon on 18 November.
With Replay TV, the programmes can be paused, rewound and fast-forwarded at any time. Subtitles and, if offered, the original-language soundtrack of movies will also be recorded by the function.
"The customers of UPC Cablecom will be able to use the function free of charge on 77 channels of which 30 are in HD," UPC Cablecom spokesman Marc Maurer told Swiss newspaper Schweiz am Sonntag. The replay function will cover the last 30 hours. At competitor Sunrise TV, however, missed TV shows can be watched up to seven days after their broadcast. According to UPC Cablecom, such an expansion has not been ruled out, but is not currently planned.
Switzerland will be the first country in which UPC Cablecom's parent company Liberty Global will introduce the replay function. In addition to IPTV operators such as Sunrise TV and Swisscom TV, such a service is also offered by Internet TV platforms like Zattoo in Switzerland.
