Netherlands cable operator Ziggo has engaged security technology expert SMiT to provide CAM (Conditional Access Module) systems to protect box-free on-demand and catch-up TV services.
SMiT’s CI+ Module and CI Plus iDTV products have been certified by Ziggo for film and TV content protection aiming to offer enhanced interactive features while maintaining backward compatibility being fully compatible with CI+ v1.3 standards.
SMiT believes that the deployment marks the first successful case to offer interactive TV over CI+ 1.3 common interface in the world. The VOD CAM has built-in MHEG-5 applications to provide smoother overlay display with less resource occupancy and the increase in LSC channel bandwidth enables CAMs to access VOD catalogues for browsing via the Internet. The added feature of HD graphics is said to improve the user interface and the provision of dynamic tuning allows the cable head-end to inform the CAM which channel the TV should be tuned on, and view the selected VOD content.
The CAM provider is confident that its technology supports a true VOD on cable solution that offers cable operators potential for new services and increased ARPU. Indeed, Pieter Vervoort, VP consumer products and innovation at Ziggo, said: “This development offers our customers great benefits."
Added SMiT president, Hongyu Shuai: "SMIT CI+ 1.3 VOD CAM is tailored for operator's cloud based interactive services, and it brings subscribers a better viewing experience. With the interactive CAM, Ziggo subscribers can enjoy interactive services directly on their TV-set without any other equipment, such as extra leads or remote control. It is a pleasure to work with Ziggo to offer this high-demanding and cutting-edge product."
