Movistar has announced that is to start offering Movistar Play in Chile, with the over-the-top (OTT) service becoming available within the next few weeks.
The OTT platform will compete in a market in which Netflix, Totalmovie and Bazuca are already operating. It currently has a catalogue of 1,800 titles including movies, series, documentaries and concerts, with specific focus on children’s content and family entertainment. Movistar Play has more than 200 premium films which can be purchased for 48 hours.
The service can be subscribed to for Web consumption or as an addition to Movistar Hogar, the home platform of Movistar with broadband, TV and fixed telephone. Play is also available for Android devices — with an iOS and Windows Mobile app launch scheduled for Q1 2014 — and LG and Samsung smart TVs.
“Movistar Play is a complement to our traversal TV and entertainment offer, using the new consumption tools that customers have,” explained Sebastián Precht, broadband and IPTV manager at Movistar Chile. “We intend to strengthen the network and the recent 4G LTE to improve the viewer experience,” he added.
The Chilean Telefónica subsidiary aims to reach 20,000 clients during its first year. According to Precth, some growth peaks are expected during the first months, coinciding with the holiday period in Chile.
