Italian media giant Mediaset has turned to Intertrust Technologies to protect content running on its new Infinity over-the-top (OTT) television service.
Said to be a major innovation in European online TV providing rich value added entertainment for Italian viewers, the Infinity VOD service streams movies (including recently released blockbusters) and television series. It is built on the tiv¨on! system, an open platform for the Italian TV market developed by a consortium comprising Mediaset, Telecom Italia, and RAI. The latter uses ExpressPlay Marlin DRM Technologies as its exclusive rights management engine, built into major brand televisions and a variety of set top boxes in Italy. The cloud-based ExpressPlay provides DRM protection to content running on PCs, smart TVs, set-top boxes, game consoles, tablets, and mobile phones.
"After a thorough investigation of DRM technologies for the Italian market, we chose Marlin because it is an open standard, pan-European, and allows us the flexibility we need to build out a sophisticated yet user-driven service," said Alberto Sigismondi, CEO of Tiv¨, commenting on the deployment of his company's technology. "ExpressPlay provides a scalable and cost-effective solution for building out services for our customers. With ExpressPlay, OTT players can find a robust, ready to use and very cost effective solution for developing their innovative OTT services."
"Infinity and tiv¨on! are perfect examples of why we built Marlin and ExpressPlay," said Talal Shamoon, Intertrust's CEO. "ExpressPlay offers Italian service providers and broadcasters with a cost-effective, resilient, and scalable solution that relieves them of the complex task of operating a Marlin-compliant solution, so that they can focus on their core expertise of building world-class services."
