The Spanish public channel TVE is focusing on high definition (HD) broadcasting in 2014 with the launch of La 1 HD and Teledeporte HD on New Year's Day.
Both channels have been added to the schedule but they won't replace their respective standard definition (SD) channels.
TVE intends to broadcast mainly HD programmes which will also offer 5.1 multichannel audio if the viewing devices allow for the system.
Teledeporte HD, which was broadcasting in beta during the last few weeks of December, will offer the Dakar Rally, the Sochi Winter Games and the Spanish basketball league ACB, among other sporting events. TVE's sports channel has a steady audience, which is also one of the largest among the secondary DTT channels, and its HD version has been a vision for TVE's board of directors since the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
La 1 HD has replaced TVE HD, introducing the network's change of brand. With the addition of these channels, there are now six free-to-air HD channels in Spain, with Antena3 HD, Cuatro HD, Telecinco HD and laSexta HD completing the line-up.
