Netflix test drives additional pricing tiers

Netflix is trialling new pricing models based on tiers of simultaneous streams, and if all goes well, they could replace the $7.99 streaming-only subscription, which allows two streams at a time.
A test-run of an individual plan for $6.99 allows one stream at a time from an account; and a $9.99 subscription allows for up to three people to stream on one account at the same time. In addition, an $11.99 per month tier, introduced earlier this year, allows for four streams at one time.
Netflix is surely thinking that the approach could bring it new subscribers. Netflix added 1.3 million US subscribers in the third quarter and ended September with 31.1 million subscribers domestically — an impressive clip but one that analysts say is likely not sustainable.
