A new video-on-demand (VOD) television channel is launching in India, following a tie-up between the digital arm of Hollywood studio Warner Bros and Lukup Media.
The service, which will be available from February 2014, will offer newly released films – including Gravity and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – along with around 200 back catalogue movies and hit television series from the Warner Bros library.
"We are very happy to partner Warner Bros and bring a wide selection of popular and new movies and TV shows which will be available through India's first on-demand TV channel. The channel will allow people to choose titles from their TV programme guide, pay for them and view them at a time of their choice," said Kallol Borah, chief executive officer, Lukup Media.
The new-to-market Lukup Player (previewed at CES 2014) will carry multiple on-demand channels in addition to the live TV channels carried by direct to home (DTH) satellite and cable platforms, in addition to terrestrial channels and Internet videos. It will stream content to television sets, and Internet-enabled devices such as laptops, tablets and smartphones via an HDMI cable connection.
Chris Dyde, senior vice president, international licensee markets, Warner Bros Home Entertainment Group, added: "Providing consumers with more choices and improving the movie experience at home is at the heart of Warner Bros' digital strategy and we're delighted to be working with Lukup Media, which will see a fantastic selection of both new and library movies offered to viewers in India".
