French physical video market down 16.7% in 2013

The French physical video market declined 16.7% in value last year, while volumes went down 14.1%, establishing revenues for both DVD and Blu-ray sales at 929.10 million.

According to results from CNC and GfK, video household spendings reached a total of 724.16 million for DVD sales (down 18.8%) and 204.94 million for Blu-ray (down 8.8%).

However, Blu-ray market share grew to represent 22.1% of the global physical video revenues, compared to 20.1% in 2012.

Last year, 103 million DVD and Blu-ray units were sold, breaking down into 89.85 million for DVD (down 15% over one year) and 13.15 million for Blu-ray (down 7.2%).

This market is still dominated by features films the global share of which reached 60.3% last year, with a greater preference for US movies. Sales jumped to 66.7% of the movies sales against 62.9% in 2012.

The French cinema share dropped from 23.8% to 19.8%.
