Movistar TV's continued growth in the Spanish pay-TV market, says the company's president, Luís Miguel Gilpérez, will be achieved through self-produced content and exclusive programming.

Although no concrete announcement has been made, Gilpérez's statements could be related to the purchase of Formula One TV rights, which some analysts have slated as an essential part of Telefónica's immediate plans. Movistar TV has already bought the exclusive pay-TV rights for Roland Garros, announcing at the time a special emphasis on sports programming during 2014.

As reported by Europa Press, during the Transformándonos para Liderar el Sector conference Gilpérez confirmed that Telefónica is looking for exclusivity regarding content, as well as diversifying its business related to entertainment and home automation.

The Spanish telco is renewing its investments efforts in Spain, through which it reached 5.2 million homes with fibre in 2013 and extended LTE coverage to half of the country's population. Thus, the network is solid enough to improve its pay-TV platform and TV everywhere services.

Telefónica has also been strengthening its position in several Latin American markets lately, where it's mostly operating as telecoms wholesaler. Gilpérez encouraged Spanish investors to look for business opportunities in LATAM, where, he said, "Spain is known as a quality brand to trust" and the markets are offering increasing business opportunities.
