Indian direct-to-home (DTH) operator Airtel Digital TV is broadcasting a new Telugu movie on the same day as its theatrical release, marking a first for DTH in the country.
The film, Minukumanna Minugurulu (Sparkling Fireflies) is available on Airtel Digital's pay-per-view channel from 24-28 January 2014 for INR100 per day. That cost will also enable subscribers to view any or all of the eight shows available each day during this period, the operator says.
The film, which portrays the lives of 40 visually-impaired and orphaned children, was shown at the 18th International Children's Film Festival in India in November, and has been selected for six other international film festivals.
It is directed by Ayodhayakumar Krishnamsetty and stars Bollywood's Ashish Vidyarthi and Suhasini Maniratnam.
Last year the Tamil actor and director Kamal Haasan aborted plans to release his film Vishwaroopan on DTH and at cinemas a day later after exhibitors threatened not to screen it.
