Spain's Atresmedia has signed a co-production agreement with the BBC and Bambu Producciones to film The Refugees, a fiction series to air on laSexta. The format will be internationally distributed after premiering on the Spanish network.

The Refugees will be recorded in English this summer and will air on laSexta in the autumn. The bulk of the project will be undertaken by Bambu, while Atresmedia and BBC will be in charge of international distribution.

"We have been drawn by the idea of growing our portfolio outside the UK, trying to prove high quality fiction can be made with a controlled budget," explained Ben Donald, from the BBC's international division for fiction productions. "It's an ambitious project and an intriguing story, which will be produced with an international cast and creative staff."

Through this new deal, Atresmedia confirms its commitment to larger fiction productions, after audience successes such as Luna and El Tiempo Entre Costuras, which have been requested by several international networks.

"Being able to carry this production means a quality leap for us, the possibility of innovating in our own market and creating another international project. And we couldn't have had a better partner than BBC for this purpose," explained Sonia Martínez, Atresmedia's fiction director.
