MEA pay-TV subscriptions up by 23.5%

Pay-TV subscriptions across the Middle East and Africa reached 18.9 million at the end of September 2013, rising 23.5% from the 15.3 million recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2012, according to Dataxis.

Of these, 13.4 million subscribers were located in Africa (a rise of 26.4% from the third quarter of 2012), while 5.5 million were in the Middle East which witnessed 17% growth in the same period.

Direct-to-home (DTH) satellite platforms attracted the majority of the Middle East and Africa's pay-TV subscribers, with a total base of 12.6 million in Q3 2012, while 3.2 million customers now subscribe to pay digital terrestrial television (DTT) services in the region. Cable accounted for 1.5 million subscribers, while 1.2 million people now access IPTV services. A further 430,000 users received services via MMDS, said Dataxis.
