As the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, begin, NBC Olympics is prepping its broadcast production of the event.

NBC Olympics will cover simultaneous sporting events occurring each day across different venues throughout the Sochi Games. Brevity has been selected to provide simultaneous transport and transcoding technology, and Ericsson will provide its video contribution and distribution systems.

Brevity will be used by NBC in the International Broadcast Center as well as multiple venues throughout Sochi to manage terabytes of video graphics. With its platform, NBC will render graphics on-the-fly while transferring those graphics files into the Avid DNxHD format for editing. NBC will automate critical workflows needed for the production, gaining efficiencies in time and bandwidth that will provide the broadcaster with more flexibility to make edits in production material.

Ericsson will provide a range of its video processing solutions and advanced modular receivers, enabling HD broadcast to millions of American viewers. NBC Olympics will also benefit from Ericsson's specialist engineers, who, in addition to assisting with equipment/system set-up, will also be onsite 24/7 to provide multisite support for the event.

"Events like the Olympic Winter Games create an indelible impression on sports fans and we are committed to delivering a TV experience which resonates with the viewer," said David Mazza, senior vice president of engineering at NBC Olympics. "Therefore, it is imperative that this critical content is delivered to our viewers reliably and with the best picture quality possible."

Ericsson encoding solutions were also used by NBC Olympics for the 2012 London Games, 2010 Vancouver Winter Games, the 2008 Beijing Games and the 2006 Winter Olympics from Torino, Italy.

NBC continues to make technology announcements: earlier in the week it said that it had selected Adobe Primetime, the TV publishing and monetisation platform for programmers and pay-TV service providers, to power authenticated, TV everywhere video from the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi across desktops and mobile devices, including iOS, Android, Mac OS, Windows, and others.
