Any lingering doubts as to just how video will dominate mobile network traffic have been displaced by the latest Cisco Visual Networking Index.

The almost de facto benchmark for the networking industry, the Cisco Visual Networking Index Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast for 2013 to 2018 projects a near 11-fold increase in global mobile data traffic from in the time period. Moreover it says that almost five billion mobile users with more than ten billion mobile devices demanding connections with faster network speeds will drive mobile data usage.

From 2013-2018, Cisco anticipates that global mobile traffic growth will outpace global fixed traffic growth by a factor of three. Among the trends driving mobile data traffic growth are more mobile users, more mobile connections and significantly more mobile video. The report predicts that by 2018, mobile video will represent just over two-thirds (69%) of global mobile data traffic, up from just over half (53%) in 2013.

Cisco also sees a global shift to smart devices, predicting that globally 54% of mobile connections will be smart connections by 2018, up from 21% in 2013. It also sees average global mobile network speeds nearly doubling from 1.4Mbps in 2013 to 2.5Mbps by 2018 and 4G networks supporting 15% of all connections, up from 2.9% in 2013.
