ZigBee STB market set for healthy growth

The global ZigBee-enabled set-top box (STB) market is set to grow at a CAGR of 24.48% through 2018 with the key factors contributing to this growth being prolonged battery life and power saving as well as increasing digitisation of television networks.
According to the latest report from techNavio, the power-saving capability is an important feature of a ZigBee RF4CE device for consumers. The specifications for ZigBee RF4CE include a power-saving mechanism which allows both controller devices and target devices to enter a power-saving mode to manage their power consumption and thereby prolong battery life.
That process of digitisation is expected to increase the demand for STBs during the forecast period as analogue boxes must be replaces – in turn give rise to greenfield purchases of advanced digital STBs such as ZigBee-enabled boxes.
"The digitisation of cable TV is likely to give consumers a wider range of channels and better picture quality," said TechNavio, in its report. "Moreover, it helps service providers offer more channels at a lower cost. In addition, digitisation provides consumers with HD audio and video in a lower price range. In developing countries such as India, the government is mandating the digitisation of cable TV."
That said, TechNavio noted that the high cost of ZigBee boxes could pose a challenge to the growth of this market.
Key vendors dominating this space are Atmel, Cisco, Comcast, Huawei, Pace, Sony, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments Inc and ZTE.
