Movistar TV has created a new channel exclusively centred on Formula One after purchasing the broadcasting rights, which it will share with free-to-air (FTA) Atresmedia for the next two seasons.
Telefónica and Formula One Management have reached an agreement to use the brands related to the championship and create Canal MovistarF1, which will only be broadcast on the pay-TV cable platform Movistar TV. The channel will offer all the F1 races in HD, as well as the qualification rounds and training sessions. In addition, programming will include historical Grand Prix, documentaries and other shows related to F1.
Movistar TV will broadcast the channel for all types of connected devices through its TV everywhere platform GO. Race highlights will be available on demand and it will be possible to cloud-record programmes to watch later.
The championship will be also broadcast through Antena 3, Nitro and Atresmedia's online platform Antena3.com.
After a long bidding process, Mediapro, which owns the Formula One rights in Spain, opted for the option of Atresmedia and Telefónica sharing the rights. The same formula is being employed for the Moto GP season, which will be broadcast by Movistar TV and Mediaset.
