Thomas Rabe, CEO of RTL parent company Bertelsmann, firmly believes in the future of television: "Video content has never been more in demand than today," he told German weekly newspaper Die Zeit.

"We constantly invest and develop new offers. The TV channel Geo-TV will launch soon," said Rabe. The new pay-TV documentary channel is inspired by reportage magazine Geo published by Bertelsmann subsidiary Gruner+Jahr.

The business model of television is "robust", said Rabe, its reach grows "if you combine classic and online television". He added that TV advertising "is highly efficient and inexpensive compared with other media".

"Television is also not a competitor, but a beneficiary of social media," stressed Rabe. "We therefore firmly believe in the future of television. That's why it is and will stay our most important core business."
