Qatar sport channel beIN Sports has scored more points in its competition against Canal+ in France after it struck a deal with the International Handball Federation (IHF) for the TV rights of the upcoming 2015 and 2017 Men's and Women's Handball World Championships
The agreement has been concluded by representatives of both parties at the IHF Head Office in Bāle, Switzerland.
The Al-Jazeera affiliate also secures the TV production and international distribution for the events, which will take place in Qatar (men) and Denmark (women) in 2015 and in France (men) and Germany (women) in 2017.
"We love handball. It is a very popular sport and we can work more international now. Handball is very important for our network. We are proud that beIN Sports is the new home of handball," said Al Khelaifi, General Manager of beIN Sports commenting on the agreement.
Until now, the pay-TV group Canal+ held the French rights to the handball World Championships.
beIN Sports has been broadcasting the Men's and Women's Handball Champions League since the 2012-2013 season, while Canal+ still owns the French Championship.
