McKinney: Cable tech focused on DOCSIS 3.1
March 3, 2014 09.18 Europe/London By Julian Clover
mckinneyIn a Twitter chat ahead of next week’s Cable Congress in Amsterdam, Phil McKinney, the President and CTO of CableLabs said the organisation’s near term focus was on DOCSIS 3.1 and the commitment that had already been made to the industry.
In the longer term this would extend to network, content and services together with the infrastructure to enable them.
Released last November DOCSIS 3.1 will enable cablenets to deliver up to 10 Gbit/s speeds in the downstream and 1 to 2 Gbit/s in the upstream.
However, McKinney said he preferred voluntary standards and let the market decide their value.
Other topics for discussion included the timing of 4K UHD, which McKinney said was dependent on the penetration of devices and the availability of content, adding that the network was ready.
McKinney also threw his weight behind RDK, which he said would have a global impact.
During Cable Congress McKinney will deliver a keynote address on the future of cable (Wednesday March 12; 5.20pm).
