Swiss cable TV loses customers

Switzerland's cable operators recorded growth for their Internet and telephony services in 2013, but lost TV customers.

Nonetheless, with a market share of 66% (2.69 million customers) cable TV remains the mostly used TV reception method, according to industry association Swisscable.

The strongest competitor Swisscom increased the customer number of its IPTV platform Swisscom TV to one million in 2013, corresponding with a market share of 24%. With 70,000 IPTV customers Sunrise TV reaches a market share of less than 2%. DTH satellite reception is used by 315,000 households (8%) and DTT by 35,000 households (less than 1%).

Reflecting the intense competition with IPTV operators, the Swiss cable companies lost 57,600 TV customers in 2013 – a decline of 2.1% compared with 2012. The number of Internet customers rose by 104,300 to 1.05 million, corresponding with an 11% increase compared with 2012. For their telephony service, the cable operators won 68,700 new customers. In total, 642,000 cable customers were telephone subscribers - 12% more than 2012
