italy-glowCairo Communication was the only applicant for the new DVB-T frequencies offered in Italy.

The Ministry of Economic Development opened the tender two months ago and applications were due April 15. Mediaset, RAI and Telecom Italia Media were excluded from bidding, as they already operate multiple multiplexes.

Earlier Sky Italia said it had no interest in bidding for any of the licences.

The ministry will have 30 days to assess whether Cairo meets the administrative requirements of the tender, during which the company must submit its financial bid for one or more of the three batches of frequencies put out to tender. The licences require the company to cover 51% of the Italian population within five years.

Last year, Cairo Communication acquired the channels La7 and La7d from Telecom Italia media (TIM).
