Medient Studios and Tarantella Pictures have formed a joint venture to develop, finance, produce and distribute content for Asia.
Based in Kuala Lumpur, but originally from Indonesia, Tarantella Pictures is the leading production house in Malaysia, producing blockbuster films such as Lagenda Budak Setan and Ombak Rindu, and 38 television shows. Of these, 30 were listed in the top ten favourites on Indonesian television, according to the companies.
"Approximately 60% of the world's population lives in Asia. We see a comprehensive presence in Asia as a cornerstone of our strategy for the future. This relationship will leverage our existing strength in the Indian market and create a viable pan Asian platform," said Manu Kumaran, chairman, Medient Studios.
"Tarantella's founder Sharad Sharan's keen understanding of the Far Eastern market is the fundamental reason of this JV. Over the last 20 years Tarantella has built a formidable reputation in the region and we are excited by the possibilities," he added.
Sharad Sharan, managing director, Tarantella Pictures, said: "We are excited to be part of this dramatic re-engineering of the entertainment industry. With the Studioplex in Effingham County [in the US] and Atlas International in Europe, Medient have all the elements required for great success and we expect to play a vital role in this plan."
