Netflix Living RoomNetflix has confirmed it is increasing its monthly subscription fee for new subscribers from £5.99 to £6.99.
Existing subscribers will see the current price held for a period of two years.
The price hike makes the UK service £1 more expensive than Amazon Instant Video (the rebranded Lovefilm) which currently runs at £5.99 a month.
For a company that has been championing the delivery of content in 4K there is a £5.99 tier for viewing in standard definition alone, while an £8.99 multiscreen service allows four streams to be viewed simultaneously on different devices.
Prices are also rising on the continent from €7.99 to €8.99 a month or €11.99 for the multiscreen service.
Netflix now has a total of 48.4 million members, and there are still 6.7 million DVD-by-mail members in the US.
It has been building original content, most notably through Kevin Spacey’s House of Cards.
