It may not be buying a company for a change, but the Liberty Global chequebook is indeed out again: this time for technology to provide protection for linear and video-on-demand content in Europe.

The media giant and world's largest cable company and will be using Irdeto Rights to deliver content securely to IP offer the required content protection as a managed service through the cloud to IP devices. This over-the-top (OTT) service—now live in Ireland and the Netherlands, with additional countries to follow in the coming months—is available free of charge to consumers when they subscribe to both Liberty Global's internet and TV packages.

Irdeto Rights is a core element of a suite of solutions designed to provide maximum reach across the widest possible range of popular end user devices, using exclusive Irdeto technologies in addition to widely used industry DRMs. Irdeto Rights supports live streaming, multiple VOD and download-and-go viewing options as well as a full range of business models to provide additional revenue streams from licensed content. Irdeto is also working with Liberty Global to secure content over IP via the set-top-box video gateway.

"As the number of connected devices that consumers use to view content increases, operators should be looking to ensure that they are doing their utmost to secure valuable assets and that customers are able to easily access the content they desire on a device of their choosing," said Irdeto CEO Graham Kill. "Liberty Global has proven that it is committed to protecting premium content, something that Irdeto is proud to be part of."
